Adventures in Speed-Math-ing

Make sentence frames available for students to use when they are questioning their partner or defending their work. For example:. Grow the sentence frames in complexity so that students can see how playground language can grow to academic language. This activity is worth the class time. Keep this activity moving. Use a timer. Kids should be working with as many different partners and problems as is reasonably possible. As a teacher, having a positive, encouraging attitude is key to anything we want kids to buy into. React to the feedback you are getting from the kids as they engage. You may need to change things up on the fly.

3 Math Review Games to Get Students Moving

Guest blog by Mrs. Across the country and throughout our great state, classrooms are transforming in an effort to engage students in meaningful learning. Teachers are revamping their teaching styles and lessons to reach students in a way that is fun and memorable. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting.

I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state.

This course will begin on schedule in Autumn and we look forward to seeing new and returning students in person, if travel and visa arrangements allow. We will do our best to provide you increased on-campus teaching and research activities as we progress throughout the year. The event is open to 2nd – 4th year undergraduate students and MSc students.

The hope is that the visiting industry representatives are former mathematics graduates and Imperial alumni, enabling students to gain a better understanding of possible career paths in mathematics and truly understand how mathematics is used in different organisations. Current students will receive sign up information via email at the start of the new academic year.

Speed Dating is one of my favorite ways to get students out of their seat to practice. I only use this practice structure with topics that allow.

So a friend of mine mentioned the existence of same sex speed dating, and of course my immediate thought was to how you’d organise it normal speed dating is done by one sex staying still and the other moving from table to table in a loop till they’ve seen everyone. I am unfortunately at work, several years distant from the relevant undergrad maths courses and several km distant from my notes, so despite the annoying feeling that it’s Really Obvious can’t figure it out.

And thus I turn to you, the perfect set of people to figure out the maths of dating : So, we have 2n people. They are split into n pairs, and then resplit into a different set of n pairs, 2n-1 times until every person has met every other person, and noone has been paired with the same person twice. How do you figure out a sequence for each person? For extra credit: how many such sequences are there modulo renaming? I’m not sure if it’s be better to look at it as disjoint size-2 partitions of the complete graph on 2n vertices, or permutations on 2n points divided into disjoint cycles, or what : EDIT: Duh, google “round robin”.

The Teacher Who Believes Math Equals Love

What makes a great teacher great? The faded oil town is easy to miss. Fewer than 3, people live there, and the highway humps right around it.

Post a Comment. I spent the week on rational expressions and complex fractions, so I wanted to review all of that. I won’t go into all the details, because I pretty much followed the activity exactly as Kate describes it. So here’s my reflection. And they weren’t just watching someone do math, they were actively participating by either doing a problem or helping someone else do a problem.

I love empowering the students to coach each other.

A few weeks ago as my family and I were driving through the wondrous mountains of Colorado avoiding bears for real…I saw a big brown one! I was lucky enough to be sliding through twitter and came across Mr. Participants were asked questions in quick succession which made the chat super fast paced.

Good review activity. I did this in a workshop today too as a participant. We were answering get-to-know-you questions and initial ideas about the topic. This is actually a terrific idea. I really enjoy the timed part of it because understanding and knowledge can be assessed in a good way through this without having consequences to this. Also, the idea of being able to have someone to lay back on with answering the question is also very smart because it causes students to step out of their comfort zone and ask for help because they want to answer the question within the time allowed.

One question that I would have for this is if having questions previously made would be good or if students could come up with their own to have others answer. The date could be the one that came up with the question so that they would be able to administer help in a timely fashion since this is timed. Hmm, possibility? This sounds like a really fun activity!

I think it’s always great to make sure we add some fun into our class while also making sure we are doing meaningful mathematics. I like how you observed the different thinking styles as well.

MGS: Advisor Speed Dating

I used to do the same thing with my classes too! Only difference was I didn’t give the answers. They had to compare answers with their new partner and if their answers weren’t the same they had to find mistakes and figure out who was correct

First, I gather all the task cards that I want to use. This time, I used a crazy combination of task cards in my TPT store and some textbook problems that I had handwritten on scratch paper. I wrote the answer to each card very lightly in pencil on the back of each card. Before school, I lined up all the desks in two rows facing each other.

I use speed dating in my German 2 class to practice past participles. It’s kind of like walking flash cards. It works quite well, but one problem I run into is that students don’t necessarily “date” all of the possible past participles if they just move around the room randomly. Do you have this problem, or are your classes small enough that it isn’t an issue? Last time I tried a more organized setup where students formed two concentric circles and one circle rotated to find a new date.

We are working on solving systems of equations and started out by solving via graphing. This way they truly understand what they are finding when solving a system. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups. Look at them working so hard! Love them all! I made 12 sets of different equations and numbered each set.
